About this sacred program

“That which you pay attention to, you worship.” Devīmāhātmyam

Do you feel called to dive deeper into the practice of yoga? To be immersed in yoga's spiritual roots? Looking for deeper wisdom to understand the tantric Goddess tradition? Want to contemplate how this wisdom can help you to navigate modern life?

Katie Durgā is excited to offer wisdom from her own lineage and tradition in a return of her beloved Goddess Series!

The Goddess Series: The Navadurgā - the Nine Sacred Forms of Durgā offers a whole weekend of wisdom, sacred stories, beautiful practices and community. Over the weekend, we will:

  • Refresh your understanding of the traditional perspective of what yoga is – both the state of yoga and the practice of yoga.
  • Provide an overview of the context of the tantric Goddess tradition on the yogic path, including hearing Katie Durgā's personal journey with Durgā.
  • Understand the great Śaktī - Durgā Mā - as a Goddess and how She can help you navigate life. This will include an awareness of Her scripture - the Devīmāhātmya and Her festival, Navarātri.
  • Explore each of the Navadurgā - the nine sacred forms of Durgā. We can invoke different Divine Feminine archetypes on our individual paths to help us manage householder life and to support our evolution and growth. When we explore these archetypes for the Navadurgā, we will discuss the specific energy and qualities each Goddess represents, reflecting on the name of each Goddess, and unpacking Her form and weapons. We will discuss how She connects to your energy body (cakras), immerse in HerStory, Her qualities and wisdom. As we do this we will be contemplating how She can support us in modern life. We will also cover how to embody Her through rituals, practices and how you live your life.
  • Enjoy some deeply feminine practices of breathwork, kriyas, mantra and meditation, allowing us to integrate the wisdom in our beings.

This course is open to everyone – teachers and practitioners who have an interest in learning more about ancient wisdom, the Goddess tradition and yoga philosophy. Remember that the wisdom will meet you where you are at. If you are drawn to this course – follow that intuition – it is arising for a reason!

I share this from my heart to yours - as a devotee of Durgā, and as someone whose life was transformed by Her grace. It’s not “my wisdom” – it is timeless wisdom. Come and explore this with me.

When and where?

This training will be held at Kind Studio in Fyshwick, Canberra over a weekend during sacred autumn Navarātri celebrations - a very auspicious time to receive this wisdom.

Saturday 21 March – 11am to 5pm

Sunday 22 March – 11am to 4pm

My hearts work.

I recently finished reading a book called The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.  A powerful book.  There was a paragraph at the end that stopped me in my tracks.

“Men tell stories”, I say. “Women get on with it.  For us, it was a shadow war.  There were no parades for us when it was over, no medals or mentions in history books.  We did what we had to during the war, and when it was over, we picked up the pieces and started our lives over.”  Vianne - The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

This novel is about the role of women in France in WWII, but it spoke of why I am so passionate about the role women in yoga history.  Why I have been slowly gathering these stories for over a decade.  Because women had such a pivotal role in keeping the tradition of yoga alive for millennia during multiple invasions of India.  They did what they needed to do to keep the wisdom and rituals of yoga alive.  And yet so few books or trainings or academics of yoga history speak of them.

I am so excited to be creating this program ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants - Understanding the Role of Women in Yoga History”.  Let our stories be told.  Let women be mentioned more in history books. Let it be normal for people to ask the role of women in yoga history.  Maybe together we can change the narrative.

My research is being finalised for this magical program.  This will be created from my own personal extensive travels in India - with a North India focus.   It is simply a beginning - this is such a vast and complex area of history. Let's begin together.  Watch this space later in 2027.  If you have suggestions for inclusions, or would like to be put on the wait list, please email me.

Join me for The Art of Rest by Katie Welsh® : Restorative Yoga and explore this rejuvenating practice.  Restorative yoga is a relaxation and rest practice that replenishes and heals the body through the parasympathetic nervous system.

Burnout is on the rise around the world, and in Australia. Doing more is a feature of modern society. Mental health issues abound. The need for rest has never been greater, and this is being seen by increasing demand for quieter yoga classes.

The Art of Rest by Katie Welsh® - Restorative Yoga will bring you an understanding of restorative yoga from a historical, theoretical and practical perspective, allowing you to be able to serve the need of the community.

This program includes:

  • An understanding of the traditional perspective of what yoga is - both the state of yoga and the practice of yoga
  • Delving into what restorative yoga is and how it can help people discover the state of yoga. You will also understand the differences between restorative yoga and yin yoga
  • Considerations of why people need rest practices in the modern world
  • A brief history of the tapestry of yoga, including when more physical practices emerged, including restorative yoga. This will include consideration of the history and philosophy of rest
  • An overview of recent research on the benefits of restorative yoga practices
  • Looking at restorative yoga from the perspective of our physical, mental, energetic and spiritual bodies
  • Learning to teach and practice some key restorative yoga āsanas, including the use of yoga props, and understanding variations for most bodies
  • A deeper understanding of some of the ancient practices such as sankalpa, pranayama, mudras, and the concept of silence that can complement your restorative yoga practices
  • The art of holding restful space and creating an experience for your students, and
  • An opportunity to be involved in post-training mentoring with Katie Welsh as you shape your offerings and practice

Format

This will be delivered as a 5 day immersion with some pre-work and a post-training assignment.   The in-person training will be held at a yoga studio in the ACT.  Once completed, you will receive a 50 hour YTT certification.  CPD hours can be counted for both Yoga Australia and Yoga Alliance.

Note that this training can also be incorporated into a broader YTT for interested yoga educators.

Sharing the wisdom of yoga...

What people are saying about Katie's training

Wow. Just wow. Katie’s decades of experience and immersion in yoga philosophy are generously shared in this absolutely unique course. With deep dives into the major texts and lineages plus overviews of how the rich tapestry of yoga is woven into modern yoga, this course is what you always knew was missing from your yoga training.

The Art of Rest by Katie Welsh was one of the most beautiful trainings I have completed. Not just in yoga. The course was easy to follow and inspiring from the beginning right through to the final day. I didn’t want it to end. The passion and knowledge that Katie has made this course so grounding and nurturing, and each element complimented the next. It was well planned, beautifully executed and I would highly recommend this training to all yoga teachers, and anyone interested in learning how to rest. Thank you Katie for your wisdom, your patience and for the most magical experience.

If you have an interest in supporting your nervous system to shift from "fight or flight" into "rest and digest" mode, this course is for you. Katie has a soulful way of teaching the material in this course. Her passion for Yogic philosophy and wisdom shines through as does her embodiment of the practices she shares. It was absolute bliss to end the day of learning by having a practice at the end - I watched my average heart rate come down each day. Be warned though - restorative yoga bends time so what feels like 20 mins is actually 75 mins. I highly recommend this course if you want to feel bliss in your body - can't recommend this enough!

Katie shares her passion for the benefits of restorative yoga with contagious enthusiasm. Her depth of knowledge is profound and Katie shares it with an openness, grace, lightness and generosity that is I suspect not that usual. I might be inadvertently quoting Katie here but you really will I think get out of this course exactly what you need. To go a bit further along the path with Katie by your side is a rare privilege. She lives, eats, breathes this stuff. And maybe it’s obvious, but it hadn’t occurred to me, the training was, well, insanely restorative.  Anne

Katie’s Art of Rest was so much more than training. She shows her students how to truly embody the wisdom and principles of restorative yoga, by being in the poses and guiding others into the poses, alongside teachings on the history of yoga and the physiological, mental and subtle energy aspects of yoga. It was truly experiential to listen to Katie’s immense wisdom and knowledge of the state of yoga, while experiencing the state through the practice itself. I was able to feel the effects on my nervous system and physiology as I was learning about them.

I have never experienced a training where my energy stayed constant, my mood and attention were even and focused. Katie is a wonderful teacher who fully embodies the practice and the wisdom teachings, expertly holds the space for the practice, and gently educates her students to do the same. I highly recommend for both personal and professional development.

I have practiced yoga with Katie for many years and her classes and teachings are amazing. Katie’s gentle restorative style is perfect for the workshops and classes she offers, and she has the amazing ability of being able to take you deep inside with both her voice and the variety within her practices. I’ve attended a number of Katie’s offerings (both online and in person) and through these I continue to gain a deeper understanding of the true nature of yoga – not just the physical practices . Katie’s knowledge and love of the yogic philosophies (foremost the Bhagavad Gita) and the ancient teachings of yoga is evident and she is always willing to share these teachings, weaving them beautifully into her workshops and classes. Before meeting Katie, yoga to me was more or less a physical practice, but with Katie’s guidance and teachings that has very much changed. She has inspired and guided me to delve deeper into ‘real yoga’, which has enabled me to practice and incorporate the deeper teachings of yoga within my own life and the classes I offer.  I feel there is a real need for the philosophy training Katie is intending to offer, and I can’t think of anyone I would rather learn from – Katie has a clear and easy teaching style, and makes the sometimes complex philosophy easy to understand.

I am deeply grateful to have attended “The Art of Rest by Katie Welsh - Restorative Yoga YTT. It was truly a rewarding and enriching experience. Katie, you are an amazing, passionate and dedicated yoga teacher. Your wisdom, knowledge and energy was enlightening. Thank you for sharing.  This is so much more than a teacher training. I am not a teacher but this training has taken my personal practice to the next level. The learnings extend from the history, purpose and philosophy of Restorative Yoga to the nature of the practice incorporating Restorative Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Mantra and much more! A great balance between theory and practice.  I am more aware of my body, mind and spiritual connection. Experiencing the benefits and power of Restorative Yoga was definitely an outcome of this course.  Thank you Katie for a fantastic life changing course.

I cannot adequately put into words what this special course - The Illumination Path - meant for me. It was a joy from beginning to end and Katie's wisdom, passion and absolute generosity in sharing all this is truly something. I know I have witnessed and been part of something special here, and its impact I will carry with me for the rest of my days

I loved every part of The Illumination Path. Katie did a wonderful job of summarising the almost unfathomable history of Yoga Philosophy into an offering that was accessible, interesting and inspiring. I especially enjoyed the stories of the Gods and Goddesses and the sharing from Katie as to how to live fearlessly and to find your own Yoga pathway. This course is a must for all yoga teachers and for students who want to understand the ‘why’ behind the practice.

The Art of Rest by Katie Welsh teacher training was a beautiful experience and one of the best trainings I have done. I now have a much deeper understanding of restorative yoga, the science behind it, the benefits, the postures, how to bring it in to my own practice and importantly, how to teach and share Restorative Yoga with others, to help bring more balance into our lives and particularly our nervous systems. Coming in to this training I was a little unclear as to the differences between yin yoga and restorative yoga, and I now truly understand – they have very different purposes. Katie is a wonderful teacher - generous in sharing her own experiences, learnings and wisdom in a friendly, easy to understand way.  Thanks for listening to your calling Katie.
